Nefertari's burial outfit returns to the Egyptian Museum in Turin: inaugurates new exhibit dedicated

The Egyptian Museum of Turin inaugurates a new exhibit dedicated to Queen Nefertari's grave goods, 120 years after the discovery of Nefertari's tomb in the Valley of the Queens.

The Egyptian Museum of Turin will inaugurate on August 9, 2024, the new display dedicated to Queen Nefertari’s burial trousseau, which after a journey that saw it displayed in various museums around the world returns to the Piedmontese capital. One hundred and twenty years after the discovery of Nefertari’s tomb in the Valley of the Queens, Nefertari’s trousseau will in fact be displayed in the same showcases that housed it in the early twentieth century desired by Ernesto Schiaparelli.

In the winter of 1903, Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Egyptian Museum, initiated the Italian Mission’s first major excavation in the royal necropolis of the Valley of the Queens. The search continued for the next three years, culminating in the discovery of more than forty tombs, many of them hitherto unknown, belonging to queens and princes of the New Kingdom (1539-1077 BCE). Among them, the most extraordinary discovery was that of 1904: the tomb of Queen Nefertari, wife of Ramesses II, whose splendid interior decoration remained almost completely intact.

In addition to the precious artifacts, the new permanent exhibit will include a textual apparatus and video narrative that reconstructs the original context of the queen’s tomb.

To celebrate the return of the precious trousseau, the Egyptian Museum has invited a special guest: Tarek Tawfik, president of the International Association of Egyptologists and director of the Center for Archaeological Studies and International Heritage in Luxor. On August 9 at 6 p.m. Tawfik will give a lecture in the Museum’s Conference Room. Seats in attendance are sold out, but the meeting will also be offered live streaming on the museum’s YouTube and Facebook channels.

The new exhibit was made possible with the support of Fondazione CRT.
