National Portrait Gallery reopens in 2023. Closed since 2020 for the largest renovation in its history

After three years of closure for the largest renovation in its history, London's National Portrait Gallery will reopen in June 2023.

The National Portrait Gallery in London will reopen its doors to the public on June 22, 2023 after three years of closure for its most significant renovation in its history. Visitors will see the complete refurbishment of the entire collection, renovation of the building, and a new entrance that will make it more welcoming.

The plans, by Jamie Fobert Architects in collaboration with Purcell, and a historic gift from the Blavatnik Family Foundation made possible the incorporation of theBlavatnik Wing, the entire second floor encompassing nine galleries exploring nineteenth- and early twentieth-century society and culture.

Plans also see the return of the Gallery’seast wing to public use, restoring the Gallery’s original spaces and creating new retail and dining facilities. The new entrance will create from large windows three new doors, opening up the building’s north façade into St Martin’s Place. A new Learning Center will welcome visitors of all ages with studios, recreational spaces and high-quality facilities.

“The countdown to our reopening after the largest and most comprehensive redevelopment in our history has begun,” said Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery. “I am thrilled to be able to announce our opening date to the public, and we look forward to welcoming visitors back to our renovated Gallery from June.”

In addition to a donation from the Blavatnik Family Foundation, the project was supported by major funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other foundations. The National Portrait Gallery is grateful to these supporters, who along with others are making the project possible.
