National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia invests in sustainability: PNRR construction sites start

Thanks to NRP funding, the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia is launching a major upgrade of its heating and air conditioning systems. The intervention aims to improve energy efficiency and conservation of the exhibits through environmentally sustainable and technological solutions.

The National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, one of the landmarks for the culture and history of ancient Etruscan civilization, takes a step toward the future with the launch of an intervention that marks an eco-sustainable turnaround. Thanks to funding from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP), the museum will upgrade the heating and air conditioning systems of its exhibition and office spaces, with the aim of reducing environmental impact and improving energy efficiency, while maintaining the high standards of preservation of the precious archaeological artifacts housed inside.

“With this intervention, in addition to the upgrading of outdated facilities, the Museum will ensure real energy savings, strengthening its commitment and focus on achieving environmental goals and the green transition,” says Museum Director Luana Toniolo. “In addition, the project includes remote temperature monitoring in order to ensure the preservation of museum environments and greater thermal comfort for visitors.”

The project involves the replacement of obsolete systems with modern, low-impact solutions that will enable more efficient management of environmental variables inside the museum, such as temperature and humidity. The main objective of the changes is to improve the thermal comfort of the rooms, with particular attention to the summer season, when climate management can be critical for the conservation of the most delicate materials. The introduction of an automated and remotely manageable temperature control system is one of the innovations of the intervention, which will be implemented through dedicated software capable of monitoring and regulating climatic conditions in real time. The new system will make it possible to maintain constant temperature and humidity levels in the different rooms of the museum, adapting them to the specific conservation needs of each exhibit. To minimize the impact on Villa Giulia’s historic structures, the regulation devices will be wireless, operating via radio links, without the need for invasive construction work. In this way, complex wiring work, which could damage the architectural integrity of the museum, will be avoided. Special attention will be paid to respecting and protecting the historic building, which, although subject to the technological interventions, will not lose its characteristic beauty and functionality.

The project is funded under PNRR’s Mission 1, dedicated to digitization, innovation and culture, and falls under Component 3, which provides for improving energy efficiency in cinemas, theaters and museums. The intervention is part of a series of actions aimed at renovating Italian cultural assets and making them more attractive, safe, and accessible, both physically and digitally. The intervention at the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia is an example of how new technologies can combine with the preservation of historical heritage, while promoting a more responsible and conscious management of natural resources. The energy upgrading operation, which aims to ensure environmental sustainability, is not limited to the simple optimization of energy consumption. The improved performance of the facilities will also result in increased comfort conditions inside the exhibition spaces, offering a more pleasant and functional use to visitors. Thanks to this intervention, the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia will not only improve energy efficiency, but also contribute to raising public awareness about the importance of sustainability in the management of cultural heritage.
