National Archaeological Museum of Nuoro reopens after three years

The "Giorgio Asproni" National Archaeological Museum in Nuoro reopens after being closed for three years, with a more modern and functional look.

The “Giorgio Asproni” National Archaeological Museum in Nuoro reopens on Friday, August 13, after three years of closure for renovation and security work.

The museum reopens to the public with a more modern and functional look in an exhibition space that spans two floors. Underlying the new layout is the idea of telling the history of the territory through a linear and immediate path, with a significant selection of exhibits in the showcase. Each find is accompanied by a caption indicating the type of find, provenance, date, and in-depth information that can be downloaded to one’s smartphone or tablet and through QR codes distributed along the entire route. Pending the final completion of the work, it will currently only be possible to visit the ground floor of the building, where a route has been set up to provide visitors with a complete picture of the history of central eastern Sardinia in its various prehistoric and historical phases.

Also returning to the exhibition are the approximately three hundred pieces, among the most significant in the collection, which were lent for a major exhibition in 2014 and have not been displayed since.

Located in the historic center of Nuoro and on the slopes of Mount Ortobene, the museum is an important cultural reference for the surrounding area. The rich collection of archaeological and paleontological artifacts from the entire province tells the story of the territories of Barbagia and Ogliastra, from their origins to the medieval age.

The “Giorgio Asproni” National Archaeological Museum will be open from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (last admission 2:50 p.m.), with a guided tour service, by reservation only, at nucmero 0784 31688 or by e-mail at drm-sar.museoarcheo.nuoro@beniculturali.it.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. and will be reserved for authorities only, by invitation only, in the presence of museum director Stefano Giuliani.
