The Sansevero Chapel in Naples expands its offerings related to accessibility and offers inclusive tours dedicated to deaf people. Starting Tuesday, December 3, videos in LIS will be available that illustrate the milestones of the Neapolitan Baroque jewel created by the Prince of Sansevero. The initiative, which launches on the International Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which falls on December 3, includes a dual offering and includes two different versions of the LIS content: one designed to accompany the experience of visiting the museum and the other for the website.
The LIS videos for the experience in the Chapel have been created with a neutral background and do not include subtitles. The LIS videos for the website will be available on the “Accessibility” page, will instead have images of the Chapel works in the background and will include subtitles. They will also be available on YouTube to enable faster access to the site and better indexing. A comprehensive tour lasting about 20 minutes in which the wonders of the Baroque Chapel are narrated in sign language. It begins with a welcome video that explains the tour as a whole, the history of the Sansevero Chapel and the figure of Raimondo di Sangro VII Prince of Sansevero. The content continues with a description of the Altar and the Vault, followed by videos illustrating the Veiled Christ, Modesty, Disenchantment, Raimondo di Sangro’s tomb, the labyrinthine floor, and the Anatomical Machines.
Partnering on the project is Imagineear, the current provider of the museum’s audioguides, which was assisted by Dr. Violante Nonno, one of three art historians nationally accredited as a guide in LIS and an expert consultant for digital products aimed at the deaf, and narrator Deborah Donadio. The video content was produced by CREI - Cooperativa Sociale di Interpretariato - Ricerca - Formazione Lis of Rome, founded in 2009 by a group of professionals with decades of experience in interpreting in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and Italian. CREI is dedicated to promoting accessibility, equality and inclusion for deaf people through LIS interpreting services, specialized training, production of accessible multimedia content and raising awareness of deaf culture.
The new LIS pathways are in addition to the many initiatives already implemented by the museum that testify to its desire to create a cultural space open to all that is able to present its audience with a differentiated offer according to specific needs and with services that are always available to visitors. This also includes the Museum for All tours, organized when the museum is closed on Tuesday, December 3, on the day the Chapel is closed to the public. The latter project has been active since 2023, and is aimed at people with intellectual disabilities, both children and adults, designed and implemented by L’abilità Onlus with the support of the De Agostini Foundation.
