Named tickets and limit of 20 thousand visitors per day: new measures at Pompeii Archaeological Park

From Nov. 15, 2024, Pompeii Archaeological Park will introduce named tickets and a daily limit of 20,000 admissions to mitigate anthropogenic pressure on the site.

From Nov. 15, 2024, Pompeii Archaeological Park will introduce personalized tickets with the visitor’s name and a daily limit of 20,000 admissions, along with time slots during the summer period (April 1 to Oct. 31) to better manage tourist influx. During summer peak hours, access will be divided into two time slots: from 9 a.m. to noon, with a maximum of 15,000 visitors (12,000 with Pompeii express tickets and 3,000 with Pompeii +), and from noon to 5:30 p.m., with a maximum of 5,000 visitors (3,000 Pompeii express and 2,000 Pompeii +). Name tickets will be compulsory for all types (including Pompeii express, Pompeii +, Pompeii 3days and single site tickets) and can be purchased both online and at ticket offices, where an original ID must be shown.

This regulation comes after a record-breaking summer, which saw inflows never before seen in the history of the excavations, with more than 4 million visitors and peaks of 36,000 in one day on Free Sundays.

“We are working on a series of projects to mitigate anthropogenic pressure on the site, which can be a risk both for people, for example in the event of an earthquake, and for the heritage, which is so unique and fragile,” said Pompeii Archaeological Park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel. “In particular, we are working to expand the usable areas in the ancient city and to develop the other sites in the area, including Boscoreale, Torre Annunziata, Villa dei Misteri, Civita Giuliana and Stabia. We are aiming for a slow, sustainable, pleasant and non-mass tourism and, above all, spread throughout the territory around the Unesco site, which is rich in cultural gems to be discovered. Measures to manage flows and security and personalization of the visit fit into this strategy. Experience shows that only those who focus on quality grow in a sustainable way, and we are focusing on this, while trying to help the territory and the professionals who are working in a conteso that has changed profoundly since the pandemic and will change again. These changes need to be managed in a shared and proactive way and not passively endured. In this start-up phase we will closely observe the situation and continue the dialogue with all stakeholders to possibly adjust course.”
