Naked at the museum: in Milan, for the first time in Italy, comes a nudist guided tour, open to all

For the first time in Italy, a nudist guided tour: at Milan's PAC for the exhibition 'Australia, Stories from the Antipodes.' Conducted by artist Stuart Ringholt.

A two-hour guided tour of the exhibition Australia, Stories from the Antipodes, the group show of contemporary Australian artists running at the Pavilion of Contemporary Art (PAC) in Milan from December 17, 2019 to February 9, 2020. And so far nothing strange: the peculiarity lies in the fact that guide and visitors will be completely naked. After several other experiences in various countries, this is the first time that a nudist guided tour is proposed in Italy, and the guide for the occasion will be the Australian artist Stuart Ringholt, one of the exhibiting artists: the 48-year-old artist has already proposed experiences of this kind around the world in the past and will propose it in Milan as well. Appointment on Jan. 18, 2020, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

“The work,” reads the official presentation of the event, “inverts the theme of nudity in art history and questions the viewer’s relationship to the spatially confined architecture of the white gallery, exploring nudity as a further solution to this approach and interpretation of the work. A rare opportunity to literally remove material barriers between artist and audience, but also to explore the effects of nudity and experience what happens when a group of strangers in a museum space shed their protective layers.” The visit is for adults only, lasts two hours, is conducted in English (there will also be simultaneous translation, however), and participation with the exhibition ticket costs eight euros. After the visit, participants can stop for a drink in the company of the artist: again, everyone must remain strictly naked. The visit is open to all.

The exhibition Australia, Stories from the Antipodes, sponsored by the City of Milan and curated by Eugenio Viola, is the largest exhibition of contemporary Australian art ever held outside the continent and aims to explore all languages, practices (from painting to video art, sculpture to drawings, photography to performance) and perspectives of art being produced in Australia today. On display are works by Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Khadim Ali, Brook Andrew, Richard Bell, Daniel Boyd, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Barbara Cleveland, Destiny Deacon, Hayden Fowler, Marco Fusinato, Agatha Gothe-Snape, Julie Gough, Fiona Hall, Dale Harding, Nicholas Mangan, Angelica Mesiti, Archie Moore, Callum Morton, Tom Nicholson (with Greg Lehman), Jill Orr, Mike Parr, Patricia Piccinini, Stuart Ringholt, Khaled Sabsabi, Yhonnie Scarce, Soda_Jerk, Dr Christian Thompson AO, James Tylor, Judy Watson, Jason Wing, and Nyapanyapa Yunupingu.
