With about 750 works on display divided by periods from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, as well as an archaeological section and outdoor areas, it is one of the largest museums in southern Italy, where visitors can walk through and learn about the history of the Sicilian city.

Also on display are hundreds of works recovered from the rubble of churches and historic buildings destroyed in the 1908 earthquake.
Masterpieces by Caravaggio, Antonello da Messina, Gagini, Montorsoli, and Alibrandi, among others, can be admired.

The MuMe is part of a vast Museum Park of more than 17,000 square meters in the area of the former monastery of S. Salvatore dei Greci.
