The Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano in Milan will open in the evenings until July. For now, only on an extraordinary basis, but it is already a step toward stable evening openings. In fact, a calendar of extraordinary evening openings of the museum was announced today, scheduled for the coming months, to offer the city of Milan and its visitors more opportunities to enjoy one of Leonardo’s masterpieces live. The announcement was made by Emanuela Daffra, regional director Musei Lombardia, and Silvia Zanzani, director of the Cenacolo Vinciano.
The evening openings are possible thanks to the sponsorship of the Museum’s additional services concessionaire with the collaboration of American Express: on the seventeen dates listed below, it will be possible to admire Leonardo da Vinci’sLast Supper also during evening hours, from 7 to 10 p.m. (last entry at 9:45 p.m.), beyond the usual visiting hours (Tuesday through Sunday, 8:15 a.m. to 7 p.m.).
In some of the time slots (7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.) it will also be possible to take guided tours of the museum in Italian. Two of the evenings will be truly special because of the strong symbolic value of the chosen dates, also underscored by the entrance fee of only 1 euro. April 6, Maundy Thursday, is the day on which, according to the Gospels’ narrative, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples: the visits will be reserved for the most fragile and those who care for them. “It is a way to reaffirm,” say directors Daffra and Zanzani, “the attention to social issues also witnessed by the collaboration with the Opera prison and - more generally - the role that museums are called to play within society by inviting everyone to cross their thresholds.” Also on Tuesday, May 2, the Last Supper will open its doors for 1 euro to commemorate the anniversary of Leonardo’s death in Amboise, France, on May 2, 1519, at the age of 67. The March 3 special opening will instead contribute to the schedule of MuseoCity, the widespread initiative promoted and coordinated by the City of Milan, which involves more than 90 museums in the city with hundreds of events including guided tours, workshops for children, lectures, meetings, and special initiatives.
“This extension of the hours,” says Emanuela Daffra, “will allow 420 visitors to enter the museum for each of the evenings: it is the stage of a path that aims to responsibly, and not just occasionally, expand the numbers of access to a museum like the Cenacolo, which due to conservation needs imposes strict limits.”
“We are excited to support this important initiative that aspires to enhance beauty and promote responsible accessibility to art,” comments Piotr Pogorzelski, Vice President and General Manager, Global Merchant Services Italy of American Express.
“With this first action, the concessionaire of the additional services,” says Gianni Curti, president of Verona 83, ATI’s group leader, “contributes to the enhancement of Leonardo’s masterpiece, responding to the growing requests for visits coming from the public. The evening hours, moreover, facilitate the participation of the Milanese and those engaged in work activities.”
