MAXXI L'Aquila opens its doors to visitors. Four days of free preview tours

Starting June 3, 2021, MAXXI L'Aquila, based in Palazzo Ardinghelli, officially opens to the public.

Starting June 3, 2021, MAXXI L’Aquila, based in Palazzo Ardinghelli, will open to the public. The museum venue, a kind of “branch” of the MAXXI in Rome, was supposed to open in late 2020, but due to the health emergency it was not possible.

Now the museum will be inaugurated on Friday, May 28, in the presence of Culture Minister Dario Franceschini and MAXXI Foundation President Giovanna Melandri. Also in attendance will be MAXXI L’Aquila Director Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, MAXXI Architettura Director Margherita Guccione, MAXXI Artistic Director Hou Hanru, MAXXI Secretary General Pietro Barrera, L’Aquila Mayor Pierluigi Biondi, Abruzzo Region President Marco Marsilio, and Russian Federation Ambassador to Italy Sergey Razov.

To the public, however, it will be officially open from May 3, Thursday through Sunday: Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays through Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. It is mandatory to purchase tickets online starting June 3, 2021. There is a possibility of last minute purchase at the ticket office upon verification of capacity availability in compliance with physical spacing. Weekend and holiday tickets must be purchased by the day before the visit.

MAXXI L’aquila aims to be a laboratory dedicated to artistic and cultural production open to the territory; a space where art, architecture and photography collections will also be displayed through temporary exhibitions, in-depth programs and educational projects. Like the MAXXI in Rome, the one in L’Aquila will host art, photography and architecture exhibitions, performances, and site-specific interventions.

Palazzo Ardinghelli is located not far from the Fountain of the 99 Spouts, a symbol of the city. It was designed between 1732 and 1743 by one of the most important Roman architects of the time, Francesco Fontana, son of Carlo Fontana, and features a façade in compound late Baroque style, a courtyard and a monumental staircase in the Borromini taste, frescoed in 1749 by Venetian painter Vincenzo Damini.

To mark the opening, four days of free preview tours are being organized: on May 30 and 31 and June 1 and 2, 2021.

Tickets: Full 7 euros, reduced 5 euros for young people aged 14 to 25 and under. Free for residents of Abruzzo Region municipalities until Dec. 31, 2021.
