New scientific director of Museo Galileo is Marco Ciardi, who as of July 1 replaces Paolo Galluzzi, who led the Florentine institution for nearly 40 years. Roberto Ferrari has been executive director since February 2021, and the appointment of Ciardi, a full professor of History of Science and Techniques at the University of Florence, is the second important step in the museum’s new organizational structure.
“It is an honor, but also a great responsibility, to receive this appointment,” said Marco Ciardi. “Paolo Galluzzi has been a master for me and for all those of my generation, and he has made Museo Galileo an international reference point in the field of museum conservation, research activities and popularization of the history of science and technology. As for me, I will try to lend a hand to the activities of the Museum, within the limits of my skills and abilities, trying to make the most of the many professional excellences present in the institution.”
Marco Ciardi graduated in Philosophy in 1991 from the University of Florence, with a thesis dedicated to the genesis of Avogadro’s hypothesis, one of his specialized research topics. In 1997 he received his Ph.D. in History of Science. Since 2000 he has been in service at the University of Bologna, first as Researcher and then as Associate Professor. Since March 1, 2021, he has been Full Professor of History of Science and Techniques at the University of Florence.
He has more than two hundred publications to his credit, both in Italy and abroad, including about thirty volumes, including monographs, curatorships and editions of works. His field of inquiry mainly concerns the history of modern and contemporary scientific thought. He is also interested in the study of the relations between science and literature, science and pseudoscience, and the analysis of the relations between scientific culture, education and democracy. Alongside his research activity, he also produces in the field of historical and scientific popularization, for which he has also won awards and prizes.
