Marche National Gallery, work on the main floor kicks off: will improve lighting and layout

Redevelopment work on the main floor of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche will start on Tuesday, June 20. They will increase the quality of the plant system, especially the lighting system, as well as the arrangement of the works.

As part of a complex program of intervention worth 430 million euros made available by the “National Recovery and Resilience Plan,” some rehabilitation work on the main floor of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, located in the Ducal Palace in Urbino, will kick off on Tuesday, June 20. The work will increase the quality of the plant system, particularly the lighting system, as well as thedisplay of works. For about six months the entrance to theAppartamento della Jole will be banned and, for a longer period, that of the Melaranci. In the latter, in fact, the temporary storage of the works will be prepared, where systematic disinfestation operations will be carried out, in anticipation of the refitting.

Well before the deadline at the end of June, the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche has called for tenders for restoration, renovation, retrofitting and energy efficiency in the halls of the largely Renaissance-era building. Over the next two years, work will be planned on the systems and, in particular, since it is not possible to air-condition the entire halls of the main floor, special heating seats will be installed, designed to provide a comfort break in the colder months. At the same time, the layout of the museum will be revolutionized, with the creation of new thematic rooms intended to tell the special features and bring history to life, from Frederick’s Court to the Processional Banners, from the theme of Crucifixes to painting in the Marche region, passing through a focus on Giovanni Santi, another on Piero della Francesca’s Flagellation, the room of the Madonna of Senigallia, and that of Raphael and his friends. Each work will be accompanied by a reasoned caption, the creation of which was entrusted to the students of the School of Specialization in Art History in Rome. It is a project that will also include a makeover of the online site and will cost a total of six million euros, to which another million earmarked for the Rocca di Senigallia and the National Archaeological Museum in Ancona will be added.

As for timing, “the first step is by Christmas when the historic Appartamento della Jole will be completed at the Ducal Palace,” assures the director of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche Luigi Gallo. “But by 2025, even before the deadline, we will have completed all the work. And without ever closing the museum to the public. What comes into full swing in these weeks,” Gallo concludes, “is therefore a small revolution. But also the crowning achievement of a multi-year work. It is a great collective work, in short, with Urbino at the forefront, a team effort of which I am particularly proud.”
