In Mantua, the museum of Palazzo Ducale is ready to reopen as soon as possible: it is today’s news that the minister of health, Roberto Speranza, has announced the reopening of museums from January 16 in the regions in the yellow zone, and it will therefore be necessary to verify in which band Lombardy will be included, but the institute of Piazza Sordello has already activated to restart as soon as the situation allows. This was reiterated in recent hours by the director of Palazzo Ducale, Stefano L’Occaso: “we are ready to reopen in complete safety as soon as we are given the green light from Rome.”
In addition, the museum lets it be known that, to encourage the public to return to the halls, admission will be free during the first week of opening. But that’s not all, because a new feature has already been announced: after the first week, free admission will remain in effect every Thursday until March 18, the feast of Mantua’s patron saint, St. Anselm, so that as many visitors as possible can get to know the Ducal Palace.
“The contagion situation,” acknowledges Director L’Occaso, “is not comforting, and the government’s caution is perfectly understandable: however, should government measures allow museums to be open, we would be ready. We have been working to iron out all the details and offer an even safer and more exciting visit to our magnificent palace. The months of closure have been useful to focus on other activities of fundamental importance to the museum, such as restorations and major tenders. In addition, some prestigious additions to our collections have recently come to fruition, which we will bring together in a small exhibition on the ground floor of St. George’s Castle. It will be a small gift for those among the first who will want to return to visit our palace. We will go into more detail shortly: the cultural program we have planned for 2021 is rich and interesting, and we hope to launch it for real as soon as possible.”
Good news also on the “front” of subscriptions: despite the pandemic and closure, in fact, the annual subscription campaign of the Ducal Palace has already reached and exceeded one hundred subscriptions sold. “It had never happened,” they let the museum know, “that so many people chose, during the Christmas season, to buy or give their loved ones a pass valid 365 days to be able to visit the Ducal Palace of Mantua. Supporting culture in this difficult time of health emergency is not only a nice gesture, but reflects a sense of civic responsibility and social cohesion that deserves more than praise: a useful and concrete action that allows people to visit one of the largest monumental complexes in Europe as many times as they want. The entire staff of the Ducal Palace would therefore like to sincerely thank all those (Mantuans and non-Mantuans) who have decided to support and even just spread the word about this initiative of ours.”
