Mantua ’s Ducal Palace also joins the #iorestoacasa campaign and does so with its digital tools, through headings launched on the museum’s social channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram): #luoghidipalazzoducale, #palazzoducalescomparso and #palazzoducalenascosto. The public will find insights into aspects of the history of the Ducal Palace: a series of unpublished articles, written and edited by museum officials, will illustrate more or less well-known places in the vast Gonzaga complex.
The starting point is the Bridal Chamber, recounted by Giovanni Paccagnini (1910-1977), who was a longtime Superintendent and became famous for bringing to light Pisanello’s superb cycle of frescoes during restoration work in the 1960s. Then again, the description of the disappeared Palazzina della Paleologa through the account of art historian (former director of the Polo Museale della Lombardia) Stefano L’Occaso, who summarizes the articulate story of its demolition in the late 19th century.
Art historian Michela Zurla, on the other hand, illustrates some little-known places in the palace such as the Rooms of Cities and the Hall of Landscapes inside the Domus Nova by Luca Fancelli (c. 1430 - c. 1502) later completed by Anton Maria Viani (c. 1550 - c. 1635). With official architect Maria Lucia Masciopinto, the public will discover the historical physiognomy of a piece of St. Peter’s Square, today’s Piazza Sordello, and in particular that curious exedra (demolished in 1901) that created a monumental entrance to today’s Piazza Castello. And it could not miss, edited by archaeologist Mari Hirose, the in-depth look at the goodies in the collection of the National Archaeological Museum, which is part of the Ducal Palace complex.
All this and more is published on the Ducal Palace’s institutional website and related social media, with the cadence of one or two articles a day. The museum’s invitation is to follow these pills of Mantuan culture, presented in a simple and concise manner.
