A loss of two-thirds of visitors in July, and 6 out of 10 visitors in August: these are the figures for the Louvre during the Covid-19 summer. The percentages are compared to the same period in 2019 (which was a very good year for the Paris museum, ending with 9.6 million visitors: less than 2018, when a record 10.2 million was set, but still very high numbers).
In August, which traditionally brings large influxes of visitors to the Louvre, 550,000 people visited its halls, most of them (80 percent) French. There were mostly losses of foreign visitors: suffice it to say that, in previous years, the percentages of French visitors were between 20 and 25 percent of the total during the same period. The point, in fact, is that the attendance of non-European visitors (mainly from the United States and China, the two countries that most “feed” the museum’s flow) has practically disappeared, and foreign visitors come mainly from neighboring countries (Germany, Belgium, Holland).
The numbers were reported by the museum’s management to the France Press news agency, which pointed out that there is concern on the part of the institution about its financial situation, which is threatened by the heavy drop in visitors.
Louvre numbers during Covid: -75% in July, -60% in August |
