From August 10 to September 2, the National Gallery in London is bringing its masterpieces...outdoors thanks to an exhibition featuring more than 20 life-size reproductions of some of the collection’s most famous and significant paintings, the nation’s favorite paintings, including Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, William Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire, Sandro Botticelli’s Venus and Mars, and John Constable’s The Hay Wain.
The large-scale reproductions (one to two meters) are displayed in the central Trafalgar Square and is an initiative in collaboration with Westminster City Council: this is the first activity under the Council’s Inside Out Festival, through which it aims to celebrate art and culture to encourage visitors to experience art and return to this area of London. The square is thus transformed into an open-air gallery in which to stroll among masterpieces by Titian, Vermeer, Caravaggio, Rembrandt and many other world-famous artists.
The exhibition is accompanied by the Sketch on the Square initiative, a program of free outdoor art activities featuring real drawing lessons: thanks to Cass Art ’s support for materials, thirty easels have been installed in Trafalgar Square in order to host painting and drawing sessions with National Gallery artists and staff. Each session is free of charge and activities will take place daily for the duration of the outdoor exhibition. Visitors who wish to participate must reserve a free slot on the National Gallery website. A number of sessions will be reserved for the local community to ensure participation by those living in the neighborhood.
In addition, through the Smartify app, which can be downloaded for free on any device, visitors will be able to interact, accessing more information about each replica of the paintings in the outdoor exhibition. The latter is included in the recently expanded Art of London augmented reality art trail: the trail offers new ways to digitally explore paintings from London’s leading cultural institutions.
