Ledro Lake Pile Dwelling Museum reopens for its 2024 season. Record number of visitors in 2023

The Lake Ledro Pile Dwelling Museum, territorial headquarters of MUSE, reopens daily for its 2024 season. Record number of visitors in 2023.

The Lake Ledro Pile Dwelling Museum, the territorial headquarters of MUSE, reopens daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours. 2023 was the year with the most tickets sold: 43,820, a record for this UNESCO World Heritage site. Then from the entire ReLED Network - Rete Museale Ledro, comes the most surprising news: in 2023 more than 100 thousand admissions (to be precise 102.341) for the proposals of this small alliance of museums and cultural realities of the Ledro Valley (in addition to the Pile-Dwelling Museum, the Garibaldino and Great War Museum, the Foletto Pharmaceutical Museum, the Tremalzo Visitor Center, the Ampola Biotope Center, Fucina di Prè and Ledro Land Art are in fact part of it).

“ReLED - Rete Museale Ledro is growing,” said Donato Riccadonna, head of the Lake Ledro Pile-Dwelling Museum and coordinator of ReLED, “proving that the tourist-cultural offer we propose, although peripheral, is highly appreciated: from 2012, the year ReLED was established, to today the Network has expanded its audience. ReLED, in addition to being part of the MUSE universe, is itself a network system for the territory: from private actors such as the Foletto Museum at the Prè Forge, to associations such as Encontrarte and the SoLe Cooperative. The networked way of working, light and constant over the year, has borne fruits that must leap out at everyone if we consider that we are an area far from large urban centers: culture is also making economy in Ledro. The year 2023, also thanks to Ledro Land Art’s entry into the count, was a record year: 102,341 admissions. Finally, MUSE’s directing role in the Alps Ledrensi and Chiese Reserves Networks should not be overlooked, a clear sign of our museum’s ability to be on the ground in an open, collaborative and connection-making way.”

Leading the ReLED Network is the Lake Ledro Pile Dwelling Museum, a satellite site of MUSE, which last year recorded the highest number of visitors ever: 43,820 in the 303 days it was open (March through December including Mondays). Of these, 12,333 visited the museum in July and August; while 8,802 students (belonging to 476 classes from eight different regions) participated in the museum’s educational offerings. The Pile Dwelling Museum, thanks in part to the Palafittando summer poster, activated 46 animation days, 78 guided tours and more than 20 events scattered across the network in 2023.

The activities of the museum network are also connected to neighboring territories and give rise to additional appointments: examples are the collaborations with the MAG of Riva (for teacher training course and events on landscape), with the association La Miniera di Darzo and the Araba Fenice association; more institutionally, the membership in networks such as the Trentino Great War Network and UNESCO Pile Dwelling Sites.

In terms of scientific research, the Ledro pile-dwelling site is also experiencing a renewed momentum: thanks to new investigation protocols with expertise from national and international bodies and multidisciplinary approaches, the archaeological collections from the ancient village are telling new stories. From the Palafitte Bread (inspired by the Ledrense bread of 3.600 years ago), now on the market thanks to a collaboration with the Trentino bakers’ association, to the “Genesis” DNA research project, via the analysis of fingerprints imprinted on clay by the ancient inhabitants, research on drilled bear skulls, and the project to create a partly visitable, state-of-the-art repository for the study and preservation of Ledro’s finds in the spaces of the nearby former Colony, which could be made available by the Municipality of Ledro with diversified and enhancement for the whole community.

On Sunday, March 3, admission is free: the pile dwelling museum joins the first free Sunday planned at the provincial level.
