The National Museum of Qatar, a new museum structure designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the same architect as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and costing 400 million euros, opened on March 27, 2019. The new museum covers an area of 52,000 square meters and its architectural structure is reminiscent of a “modern caravanserai,” as Nouvel himself calls it, in that it is reminiscent of the traditional place that was used for caravans crossing the desert to stop. The new Qatari museum presenting pavilions surrounding a large courtyard and the historic Fariq Al Salatah Palace, built by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al-Thani as his residence and seat of government. The building features 539 “petals” with a variable curvature diameter, ranging from 14 to 87 meters at its widest point, going to compose a sort of desert rose. Sand-colored polished concrete floors, walls covered with a plaster imitating stone, and the presence of aromatic plants and an artificial lagoon make the museum resemble its surroundings.
Located south of Doha, the museum aims to talk about the country’s history and uses interactive environments for families, spaces for cultural activities, workshops and lectures. There are 11 galleries that make up the museum, divided into three “chapters” (“The Beginnings,” “Life in Qatar,” and “The Modern History of Qatar”), for a tour focused mainly on natural history and aimed at telling the whole story of Qatar, from prehistory to the present. This is done through eight thousand objects, including archaeological artifacts, textiles and costumes, jewelry, everyday objects, embarkations, works of art, books, and historical documents.
The structure is the first monument visible to travelers coming from the airport. Sheikh Al-Mayassa Bint Hamad Khalifa Al-Thani and Sheikh Amna serve as president and director, respectively. The inauguration was attended by actors such as Johnny Depp, supermodel Naomi Campbell, and politicians including Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi, who flew to Qatar to discuss projects concerning the capital and attracting investment from the emirate.
