In the tunnels of the ancient Lapillo Theater of Herculaneum traveled in the 18th century by Grand Tour travelers

On MiBACT's YouTube channel, a video leads into the tunnels of the ancient Lapillo Theater in Herculaneum, an access route in the 18th century for Grand Tour travelers.

On MiBACT’s Youtube channel it is possible to take a journey through the tunnels of the ancient Lapillo Theater, an ancient access to the excavations of Herculaneum that was used by Grand Tour travelers in the 18th century.

Discovered in 1710 thanks to a Resina farmer while digging a well to irrigate his vegetable garden, the theater immediately revealed its treasures: precious marbles that were immediately purchased by a craftsman employed in the construction of the Prince d’Elbeuf’s splendid villa at Garnitello di Portici. The prince, aware of the location of ancient Herculaneum, which had been known since the 16th century, immediately undertook excavations that still take place 25 meters below street level: an evocative network of tunnels that was long used as access to the remains of the Roman city by travelers of the time. These are retraced in a video to make virtual access possible for all.

Through this initiative, the MiBACT is showing not only what is usually accessible to the public, but also the behind-the-scenes of cultural heritage.
