In 2024, the Uffizi Diffusi at the Vittoriale with an exhibition on the link between D'Annunzio and Tuscany

The Uffizi Diffusi will arrive in 2024 at the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera: an exhibition on the relationship between Gabriele d'Annunzio and Tuscany will open in March, with loans from the museum in Florence but also international loans.

The collaboration between the Uffizi and the Vittoriale degli Italiani had already been announced last spring, and now the Florentine museum is announcing what will be the project that will see the two institutions working together: in 2024, in fact, the Uffizi Diffusi will also come to Gardone Riviera with an exhibition on the inseparable link between Gabriele d’Annunzio and Tuscany. The exhibition is currently being prepared: curated by Andrea Baldinotti, it will be held from March 9 to September 15 in the spaces of the twentieth-century complex in Gardone Riviera, and a rich nucleus of dozens of works from the Galleries and the Vittoriale itself will make up the itinerary. But that’s not all: important loans from other Italian and foreign museum institutions are also expected. The aim of the exhibition is to highlight some of the lesser-known aspects of the Vate’s existence and his vast cultural imagination; in particular, the link between D’Annunzio, the Tuscan territory and its artistic civilization will be explored. A relationship, tenacious and indissoluble, that lasted for the entire existence of the poet, who linked to Tuscany, just to give a few examples, the key moment of his intellectual formation and his first poetic tests and the fertile period of his dramaturgical production, thanks to his association with Eleonora Duse.

The exhibition itinerary will thus give an account of the encounters the poet had with works preserved in Florentine museums, particularly at the Uffizi Gallery. Encounters that innervated with themselves plots of theatrical and poetic works, which aroused suggestive notes within the more exquisitely narrative production.

The idea of the exhibition, announced today during the presentation of the exhibition Michelangelo and d’Annunzio. The Body and the Soul, in the Palazzo Guadagni Strozzi Sacrati rooms in Florence, was launched, as anticipated, last April during a cultural event at the State Archives in Pisa by Guerri, and welcomed in real time by Schmidt, who was taking part in the initiative. In just a few months, the project became a reality.

“The Uffizi diffuse,” says Uffizi director Eike Schmidt, “is once again pushing outside the borders of Tuscany, in an exceptional venue such as the Vittoriale, with an exhibition that is a reversal of the ’text and image’ theme. Rather, it aims to highlight the weight of the image drawn from the works housed in the Florentine museums on the text (but also on the life) of one of the greatest literati, poets and intellectuals of the 20th century. If, in fact, the references of lyrics such as, for example, ’La sera fiesolana,’ are obvious from the title, one can easily identify, in the verses of the Vate, the aesthetic emotions aroused by Renaissance forms (one among all, that of the ’nymph’ so much studied in the same years by Aby Warburg), and of many other images in verse, which take their cue from works of art. The exhibition will therefore also be an opportunity to look at the Uffizi heritage with new eyes and an unprecedented literary curiosity.”

“I am excited about the arrival of the Uffizi spread at the Vittoriale,” says Giordano Bruno Guerri, president of the Vittoriale degli Italiani Foundation. “This exhibition reflects the strength of the network and cooperation between museums, which is fundamental to our cultural projects. It will be a tribute to the love of Gabriele d’Annunzio and his passion for Florence, and it will also be a way to enrich the narrative of the Vate and to enhance even more the Vittoriale, one of the most visited house museums in the world, thus helping to spread the beauty and history of this extraordinary place.”

“We know how much Gabriele D’Annunzio loved Florence and Tuscany,” said Tuscany Regional President Eugenio Giani, “as well as the works of art he showed to his guests as a sign of the beauty he collected. Now, thanks also to his dedication, the ”Uffizi Diffusi“ project crosses our borders and lands in a place of recognized value for the country: the Vittoriale degli Italiani, in Gardone Riviera, which was created at the instigation of Gabriele D’Annunzio himself, who died here in 1938 and who made his life art itself and a hymn to absolute beauty. Elements that combined perfectly with his love and his stay in Tuscany from which he was inspired so many times in his works.”
