After the recent reopening of the19th-century wing, the Antonio Canova Gypsotheca Museum in Possagno is preparing for a 2025 full of cultural events, with a calendar of exhibitions, photography workshops, theater performances and educational activities for schools and families. The program was presented today at Palazzo Grandi Stazioni, headquarters of the Veneto Region, in the presence of Possagno Mayor Valerio Favero, Canova Onlus Foundation President Massimo Zanetti and museum director Moira Mascotto.

The year opened with the Aurelio Amendola investigates Canova project, supported by the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity. Two photography workshops for children aged six to eleven and a comprehensive basic photography course designed for children aged twelve to eighteen are planned. In addition, a series of three meetings with Aurelio Amendola will explore and deepen the evolution of photography dedicated to Canova over the years.

The first scheduled exhibition will be held from March 23 to June 21 with the exhibition Canova and the Birth of Modern Sculpture, curated by Elena Catra, who will present to the public for the first time the Head of Theseus, a plaster study for the sculptural group of Theseus on the Minotaur, made in Rome in 1783. Following this, from June 22, 2025 to January 6, 2026, will be the exhibition Carlo Scarpa and the Biennales. Works from the Luciano Gemin Collection, curated by Mario Gemin and Orietta Lanzarini, which will tell the story of Carlo Scarpa’s collaboration with the Venice Biennale through a number of works from the Luciano Gemin collection.

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Battista Sartori, Antonio Canova’s universal heir, the Museo Gypsotheca Antonio Canova will host the conference Giovanni Battista Sartori and the Legacy of Canova, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30 and Friday, Oct. 31, 2025.

Among the many initiatives promoted by the museum, great attention will be paid to the educational proposal aimed at groups, individual visitors, schools and families. Thematic paths will be organized that will allow visitors to discover the collection also through tactile exploration or with the help of LIS interpreters - Italian Sign Language. Also planned are a theater review with four performances between March and September, evening guided tours of the collection by candlelight and participation in European events such as the Night of Museums.

“The program of activities presented today reminds us that Canova is Venetian pride, Italian excellence and synonymous with beauty in the world, and for centuries he has represented that Venetian identity connected with aesthetic taste and craftsmanship,” commented Regional Councillor for Culture and Territory Cristiano Corazzari. “He is a figure of great significance not only for his extraordinary artistic talent, but also for his cultural and historical impact, and his legacy continues to influence artists and visitors, making the Veneto an important center of cultural attraction. During 2025 this symbol of art and ambassador of Veneto’s beauty and culture in the world will be presented and experienced through different dimensions such as exhibitions, photography workshops and theatrical performances, but even more important is the fact that all this will reach a wide audience and especially will be able to address the younger generations through educational proposals for schools and families.”
