The Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice is enriching its collection with four new paintings: Giorgio Vasari’s Hope, a fragment of Bernardo Strozzi’s Parable of the Wedding Banquet, Pietro Bellotti ’s Self-Portrait as an Allegory of Stupor, and eighteen drawings by Francesco Hayez for the painting depicting The Destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem.
Thanks to the purchase made by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, with the collaboration of Venetian Heritage and Venice in Peril Fund(London), these works will be exhibited at the Galleries where they will be officially unveiled on January 26.
Each of these works has its own history related to the city: Vasari arrived in Venice in December 1541, obtaining a commission for a number of paintings intended for the ceiling of a room in Palazzo Corner, which was dismantled in the late 18th century and the sections dispersed on the international market; the canvas by Strozzi, who stayed in the lagoon city, purchased in 2017, is a fragment of a larger composition large oval format representing the Parable of the Wedding Banquet; the self-portrait by Bellotti, who was from Lombardy but moved to Venice as a young man, is one of the most singular and evocative inventions of the artist’s production; Hayez’s drawings are preparatory sketches for the large canvas painting “The Destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem.”
