Free game teaches how to live responsibly in Venice while respecting the environment

Climate Hero is a new game that aims to teach people how to live responsibly in Venice while respecting the environment.

M9Edu, educational department of M9 - Museo del ’900, celebrates the 1,600th anniversary of the birth of Venice (March 25, 421 is the founding day of the City of Venice) presents Climate Hero, a new edutainment project by M9 Edu. It is a new game in which players will learn to live responsibly as they are invited to respect and protect the environment.

Developed on the Minecraft platform, in collaboration with Maker Camp, a technology partner, the new game will feature a modern hero: a paladin of sustainability who accepts the challenge to raise awareness among adults and children about the themes of M9’s Green Semesterand the most important of the 17 goals, launched by the UN in 2015, included in the 2030 Agenda.

Climate Hero sees on one side Minecraft recalling the city’s thousand-year history, with the precise mapped reproduction of the Venetian lagoon, and on the other Maker Camp. The latter, which specializes in the educational use of Minecraft within Italian schools and museums, announces the launch of this compelling new free downloadable game. Teaching conscious living and talking to kids to reflect on complex issues such as those related to climate change without precluding the game feature, through surprising “worlds”: this is the mission of Climate Hero. It ranges from sustainable development, where players are engaged in growing urban gardens or creating short supply chains and solidarity economic networks, to security and urban control service to fine motorists using polluting cars, to Venetian g ondolas with a ready-made “gondola sharing” service. The player in Climate Hero becomes the protagonist of clean-energy actions: a series of wind turbines harnessing winds from the sea and rows of solar panels, ready to intercept the sun’s rays, will lead gamers to an epic finale to be discovered.

"Climate Hero is the result of a journey that started three years ago, when M9 decided to experiment with educational paths using the Minecraft Education Edition video game platform. It is a versatile platform that allows to work across disciplines, from math to history from civic education to art," explains the scientific director of M9 - Museo del ’900 Luca Molinari. "The entire M9 Pole has been faithfully reconstructed. This gave rise to the idea of building a permanent educational pathway that we called M9 Edu Craft. The player within the virtual district finds tests to perform at gradual difficulty on topics related to M9 and school curricula. The natural evolution of this pathway was the launch of the M9 Urban Landscape contest, in its third edition running right now. In 2020 the contest saw the participation of 700 schools, more than 14,500 children between national and international territory. We are aware of the educational power of this medium and the fact that through gaming we can reach a wide community that goes beyond the school proposal. The challenge we have set ourselves with Climate Hero is to reach as many children as possible, especially that group of young people who struggle to approach the proposals and cultural routes of schools, museums and cultural centers."
