Laurence des Cars will be the new director of the Musée du Louvre, the first woman at the helm of the famous Parisian museum. As of September 1, 2021, Laurence des Cars will take over from Jean-Luc Martinez, who has headed the Louvre since 2013. President of the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée de l’Orangerie and general curator of heritage, Laurence des Cars previously directed the Musée de l’Orangerie and was scientific director of the Agence France-Muséums in charge of the Louvre Abu Dhabi project. Since 2017, she has revamped the Musée d’Orsay through a program of exhibitions, live shows, and a new approach to the works.
