Florence, Pitti Palace will have a virtual 3D model thanks to laser scans and drones

Off to a project to scan the Pitti Palace aimed at creating a 3D model of the important Florentine museum.

A new project is born in Florence from a collaboration between the Uffizi Galleries and the Laboratory of Geomatics for the Environment and Conservation of Cultural Heritage (Geco) of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at theUniversity of Florence.

The project consists of the creation of a virtual 3D model of the Pitti Palace through laser scanning and use of drones. These days, after a break due to the lockdown, a group of i researchers from the Geco lab, directed by Professor Grazia Tucci, is flying a drone for exterior shots of the Palace and also in theAmmannati courtyard. The project will last two years.

According to Geco, it will be “a complete queryable database that can be implemented over time,” and that will “document the geometric and material consistency of the palace and its environments, becoming an indispensable support for the proper management, maintenance and conservation of a valuable and complex machine like the Pitti Palace.”
