Florence, foreign mediators will illustrate exotic plants in the city's historic gardens

In Florence, a new Amir inclusion project brings 18 foreign mediators to tell the story of exotic plants in historic gardens.

Like seeds on a journey: stories of migrations of plants and people: this is the title of the project that kicks off June 16 in Florence’s historic gardens and will see a group of eighteen foreign mediators (of different nationalities: They arrive from Afghanistan, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Romania, Senegal, Tunisia, and Venezuela) conduct a series of guided tours to illustrate to the public the exotic plants present in the gardens (the Boboli Gardens, the Botanical Garden of Florence, the Archaeological Area of Fiesole, and the Primo Conti Foundation Garden in Fiesole).

This is a program conceived by Amir | Accoglienza Musei Inclusione Relazione (an experimental project for cultural mediation activities conducted by foreign nationals in seven museums in Florence and Fiesole), which aims to bring the public to explore the botanical and cultural diversity of the essences of historic gardens, narrated directly by mediators who come from the same countries as the plants. A diversity that has made gardens and vegetable gardens laboratories where plant and artistic forms that come from other climates and other crops and cultures have always reproduced and crossed paths. The plants in Florence’s gardens have been collected, even in historical times, from different continents: the Far East, Africa, South America, as early as the time of the Medici. And over the centuries Florentine cultivators, using spores and seeds, perpetuated the crops.

This project, which is part of the program of theFlorentine Summer, brings “an unusual and fascinating perspective,” says Tommaso Sacchi, councilor for culture of the City of Florence, “that of the union between botanical and cultural diversity, experienced through the opening of monumental gardens and archaeological excavations. A journey through time and space, between cultures and migrations, under the banner of contamination and with the fundamental contribution of 18 cultural mediators.”

Visits take place by reservation (visit www.amirproject.com for all info), according to the following schedule: Fiesole Archaeological Area: Sunday, June 16 - 10:30 a.m.; Primo Conti Foundation Garden: Saturday, June 22 - 4:30 p.m.; Boboli Gardens: Sunday, June 23 - 10:00; Botanical Garden: Tuesday, June 25 - 4:00 pm; Fiesole Archaeological Area: Sunday, July 7 - 10:30 am; Boboli Gardens: Sunday, August 4 - 4:30 pm; Boboli Gardens: Tuesday, August 27 - 4:30; Fiesole Archaeological Area: Sunday, September 1 - 10:30 a.m.; Botanical Garden: Friday, September 13 - 4:00 p.m.; Primo Conti Foundation Garden: Saturday, September 21 - 4:30 p.m.; Fiesole Archaeological Area: Sunday, September 22 - 10:30; Botanical Garden: Saturday, October 5 - 4:00 pm; Boboli Gardens: Friday, October 11 - 10:00 am; Fiesole Archaeological Area: Sunday, October 13 - 10:30 am; Boboli Gardens: Thursday, October 31 - 10:00 am.
