Air conditioning was probably the main Achilles heel of the Accademia Gallery in Florence, and the old system has caused quite a few inconveniences in the past. At long last, this will no longer be the case: as of Thursday, July 1, the rooms on the second floor of the Florentine museum finally reopen to the public, with a brand new air-conditioning system, and in fact a very important part of the museum’s collections is being returned to the exhibition itinerary.
In the rooms, visitors will finally be able to return to admire the Florentine Late Gothic with such masters as Giovanni del Biondo, whose sublime polyptych with Annunciation and Saints, Lorenzo di Bicci, Mariotto di Nardo, Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, Giovanni Dal Ponte with the polyptych of the Coronation of the Virgin and saints, Spinello Aretino and others who restore the climate and painting between the late 14th and early 15th centuries. One room is devoted to Lorenzo Monaco, an artist whose use of color influenced many of the painters of the early Florentine Renaissance. And here stand out, in particular, theOration in the Garden and theAnnunciation, among the greatest late Gothic masterpieces. The first room, on the other hand, houses an important collection of Byzantine icons including the so-called “Madonna of the Passion” (c. 1450-1460) by the Cretan Andreas Ritzos, which depicts the Virgin holding the infant Jesus, the Theotókos “she who begets God.”
