An agreement was signed in Carrara between the municipality and the Academy of Fine Arts that will lead to the enhancement of Villa Fabbricotti alla Padula, the site within which the Museum on Michelangelo will be built. The document was signed by the mayor of Carrara, Francesco De Pasquale, and the director of the Academy, Luciano Massari. Villa Fabbricotti, municipally owned and newly restored, will become a museum venue: on the main floor, according to the project hatched by the past municipal administration, the Michelangelo Museum will be created, which will aim to deepen the links between the city and the great Renaissance sculptor; the second floor, on the other hand, will house part of the plaster cast collection of the Academy of Fine Arts and the Lazzerini Collection (which is on display at the Plastic Arts Center until January), while the basement will become an exhibition venue for temporary exhibitions.
The agreement between the City and the Academy also includes the loan of plaster casts and works of art made by sculptors from Carrara, which will be displayed during long-term temporary exhibitions, as well as the loan for the museum on Michelangelo of some works, such as the famous Fantiscritti plaque, one of the symbols of the city, currently kept at the Academy of Fine Arts. Meanwhile, work is progressing on the museum, located inside the Padula Park in Carrara’s historic center: it is scheduled to open in 2018.
