Borghese Gallery storerooms reopen to the public again

The storerooms of the Borghese Gallery are once again reopening to the public. A unique opportunity to admire a "second picture gallery" consisting of some 260 paintings. From February 23 to May 5, 2023

From February 23 to May 5, 2023, the deposits of the Borghese Gallery will reopen once again, thus returning to public view.

This is a unique opportunity to enjoy a visit to a “second picture gallery” composed of about 260 paintings, ordered by schools of painting and thematic areas, which has no place in the museum’s exhibition plans due to the renovation, both structural and decorative, with which in the late eighteenth century Marcantonio IV Borghese modified the arrangement desired by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, founder of the Villa and the collection in the early seventeenth century.

Characteristic of the Borghese Gallery’s storerooms is precisely its layout, far from the idea of storerooms as places to cram works, but rather organized like a true picture gallery: alive, places for study and in-depth study and analysis of the works during temporary exhibitions and loans. Among the treasures kept there are also some curiosities, such as a copy of a painting by Sebastiano del Piombo, a Magdalene by Correggio, and Titian’s Three Ages of Man reproduced by Sassoferrato: the only surviving evidence of masterpieces that have disappeared and thus finds of enormous value for the study of the masters who created them.

These once closed spaces, inaccessible and unknown to most people, thus become open and welcoming, capable of revealing works of great artistic value and and restoring the history of the collection, the building and the taste of the ages.

The repositories will be open Tuesday through Friday for a limited number of people. The stay in the repositories is 45 minutes. Reservations are required by calling 06 67233753 (Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The initiative is free of charge. Entrance to the repositories does not entitle visitors to visit the museum. Meet at 4 p.m. at the museum’s information desk, located next to the Ticket Office.
