The “Massimo Pallottino” National Archaeological Museum in Melfi opens to the public Dec. 29, 2023 Masterpieces in relief: the sarcophagi of Atella and Rapolla. The Dialogue Continues, the new exhibit dedicated to the sarcophagi of Rapolla and Atella, strongly desired by the General Directorate for Museums and the Basilicata Regional Museums Directorate, and the result of a collaboration with the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, which has loaned the Sarcophagus of Atella on a long-term basis.

Visitors will thus be able to admire in a visual and cultural dialogue the Rapolla Sarcophagus and the Atella Sarcophagus, important witnesses of Mediterranean exchanges that tell of the cultural importance and role played by the Vulture territory in the Roman imperial age. The return of the Atella Sarcophagus to the “Massimo Pallottino” museum constitutes an important step in the enhancement project undertaken by the same museum and an event of great importance for the communities of the Vulture-Melfese territory that consider the two works as identity.
