At the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture in Matera, a new installation dialogues with three works by Maria Lai

At the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture in Matera, Crisa's new permanent installation dialogues with three works by Maria Lai already in the collection. Cartogram, the title of the installation, explores imaginary geographies.

The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture in Matera (MUSMA) has been enriched with a new permanent installation by Federico Carta in art Crisa (Sardinia 1984). Cartogramma, this is the title of the installation, has been placed in dialogue with the three works by Maria Lai already in the museum’s collection: a dialogue, therefore, between the Sardinian artist’s works that tell intimate and evocative stories and Crisa’s installation that explores imaginary geographies and aims to invite the public to reflect on urban and social change. The museum thus continues in its mission to promote dialogue between past and present, between works already in the collection and new ones.

With Crisa’s new installation and the new layout, the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture in Matera inaugurates its 2024 program, with a series of events that propose a continuous dialogue between the works that already belong to the museum collection and the new ones, both permanent and temporary, specially conceived for the museum spaces. The aim of the new installation is to make the language of contemporary sculpture more understandable, highlighting the connections and interactions between artists. Thanks to the collaboration with theInstitute of Conservation and Restoration of Matera, new possibilities for discussion and reflection on the importance of restoration of contemporary works are opened.

Palazzo Pomarici, home of MUSMA, nestled in the heart of the Sasso Caveoso, is an exhibition space that collects donations from artists, collectors, galleries, and art critics to the Zétema Foundation of Matera, the Museum’s sponsoring body.

Notes on Federico Carta in art Crisa

Self-taught, he has been experimenting with drawing since childhood. He began by making graffiti to devote himself to painting on recycled materials and on canvas after a few years. As time goes by, he continues his research in the city, along the streets, developing themes related to nature but also to the metropolis. He experiments with different techniques and materials, developing a personal style of research and expression. His paintings deal with themes such as urban decay, the environment, pollution, and the relationship between man and nature. These themes take shape mainly within an urban context represented through numerous symbols of his poetic imagination: antennas, washing machines, factories, buildings, desolate areas, landfills. He has created numerous murals and projects for public spaces in various cities and suburbs around the world. In 2019 he made the project Traces Asia 2562 among Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.
