Starting today, the Paestum Archaeological Park puts its heritage online: in fact, since October 20, the digital cataloging, management and study system, developed in collaboration with Visivalab, a company specializing in technological solutions that has already collaborated in the past with the Archaeological Park, developing the free App Paestum app, is online.
The new digital catalog, Sistema Hera, is an integrated GIS (Geographic Information System) where catalog information, archival documents, monument heritage and planning files can be accessed. The system makes it possible to recreate in a digital environment the contextual link of archaeological finds with the places of their discovery, the investigations that brought them to light, and their documentation. Each item indexed is georeferenced and mapped. All data in Hera talk to each other through logical relationships and can be processed for administrative, planning and fruition purposes, as well as being integrated to the national cataloging systems adopted by MiBACT.
Hera is accessible to everyone through the Archaeological Park website : everyone will have the possibility to consult the database in real time through an authentication system that organizes access in three levels. An information system is important not only for the management of a large amount of materials, but also when organizing work and planning activities and investments in order to optimize protection, conservation, enjoyment, and enhancement.
“With the new integrated system that networks collections, monuments, archives, and study and monitoring processes,” said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia, "we raise the level of protection through modern heritage management, based on a geo-referenced database that allows each object to be traced both in terms of its context of discovery and in terms of restoration work, loans and studies. We also increase the accessibility of heritage by allowing external users from around the world to access all data that are not classified as sensitive. Finally, access to archives, excavation reports, restoration interventions, and map data is also a big step forward for research under the banner of a Public Archaeology approach."
“Thanks to the work of archaeologists and collaborators,” added the archaeology officer, Francesco Uliano Scelza, “it has been possible to collect, digitize and systematize the materials in the archives, repositories and areas under the Park’s jurisdiction: from plans and drawings to scientific and administrative documents; from restoration and maintenance records to excavation data; from bibliographic material to photographic material. The result is a circular system where monuments, artifacts, and surveys are linked together through logical, topographical, and documentary relationships. There are currently more than 15,000 records entered into the system, but the work is constantly evolving, even in light of new excavations.”
In addition, among the new features, the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia is working to define digitization processes, such as the creation of 3-D models, augmented reality solutions and gaming experiences.
