The Kunsthalle Bremen launched two new innovative apps in spring 2023, both available for free on the Art Surfer multimedia platform. They are It’s an Art Match and My Pinboard Museum, which mainly aim to accompany visitors, especially younger ones, in discovering the museum’s permanent collection, bringing them closer to the works. Both apps are now accessible through the multimedia platform www.artsurfer.de without downloading, free of charge and even from home, and both access about six hundred works from the collection, including paintings and works on paper. In total, the Kunsthalle’s collection includes about 1,600 paintings, more than 500 sculptures, and about 220,000 works on paper.
It’s an Art Match is based on the principle of online dating platforms and allows an individual tour of the permanent collection. The offer is aimed primarily at people who have little or no art experience: at first, users create a personality profile, away from art categories. They will have to enter their preferences, concerning, for example, places, emotions, or animals. This will eventually result in fifteen artistic matches. Similar to an online dating profile, the fifteen works will be presented with a profile picture, name, age, short text, and location. The name always corresponds to the artist’s name. The age corresponds to the age when the artist made the work. Some works are awaiting their date in the permanent exhibition, others cannot be reached because they are in storage. The proposed list of works constitutes a personalized tour of the permanent collection. The app thus allows visitors to find their way around the museum’s 4,500 square meters. Experienced visitors can use It’s an Art Match to discover the artworks on display with a new perspective.
With My Pinboard Museum, participatory online exhibitions can be created. After registering for free, everyone can create a personal selection of artworks from the Kunsthalle’s collection, which can be combined with their own themes, self-drawn, photographed or found. This results in an online exhibition in a personalized, Pinterest-like space. Audio and text comments, a meme slogan, and wall colors can be added to this created exhibition path. Sharing with others occurs within messaging services or via social media.
It’s an Art Match and My Pinboard Museum were developed as part of the “dive in. Program for digital interactions” of the German Federal Cultural Foundation, funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM) in the Neustart Kultur program.
