A new art museum opens in the province of Mantua

The MAST - Museo Arte Storia Territorio (Museum of Art History Territory ) in Castel Goffredo (province of Mantua) officially opened its doors on Saturday, a new museum housing a collection of paintings, wood carvings, marbles, silver, manuscripts, textiles and paintings from the territory of Castel Goffredo, from prehistory to the contemporary age, with an itinerary subdivided on a chronological basis but open to in-depth studies on the “strong themes” recognized as foundational to the history of the town and theAlto Mantovano area.

The first section open to the public (others will follow) is dedicated to the period between the Lombard age and the end of the 16th century, with in-depth studies onwater understood as an element that profoundly determined the historical, urban and economic development of the city, and on weaving, an art that, documented since the 13th century, characterizes the entire territory. Space then is given to the parish historical archive, with documents from the late 15th century onward, to a modern art history library consisting of more than 1,500 volumes. Finally, visitors can walk through Save the Works!, an exhibition of works restored thanks to the support of private individuals and companies, and Acquisitions 2017, another exhibition showcasing artworks donated to the Castel Goffredo museum this year.

The MAST has also kicked off a membership campaign: becoming MASTamico (40 euros the card rate, 60 euros for families consisting of two parents and two children, 15 euros for students aged 16 to 30, and 40 euros for over-65s, who, however, also have the option of entering with a grandchild). The one-year membership entitles the member to free and unlimited admission to the museum for one year, reduced fees for participation in activities, bringing a guest who will enter at a reduced rate, and exclusive discounts and events.

The museum is open daily except Mondays and Tuesdays with the following hours: Nov. 1 to March 31, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.; April 1 to Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. (the ticket office closes half an hour earlier). Closed: on Mondays and Tuesdays, January 1, at Easter, all of August, December 25. In July open only on Saturdays and Sundays.
