A Frenchman is the new director of the Pinacoteca di Siena: he is Axel Hémery, whose appointment arrived this morning. The Ministry of Culture has in fact appointed six new directors of autonomous museums and, among them, Hémery will be at the helm of the museum housed in the Palazzo Buonsignori e Brigidi inside which is preserved the most important collection of 14th- and 15th-century Sienese gold-backed panel paintings, with masterpieces by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
Born in 1964, an art historian, he spent his childhood and adolescence in Paris. He studied art history at Sorbonne University and joined theInstitut National du Patrimoine in 1990. Three years later he became conservator at the Musée Pierre-André Benoit in Alès until 1998. Specializing in ancient art, since that year he joined the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse first as conservator and since March 2009 has been its director until today.
