Last June 23, Dorotheum held the evening session of its contemporary art auction in Vienna, enjoying considerable success for the rich catalog offered at the auction. The first part of the auction was dedicated to Italian artists. It started with two works by Alighiero Boetti, in particular the impressive tapestry Oggi il diciassettesimo giorno del sesto mese dell’anno millenovecentoottantotto (1988) doubles the low estimate and finds a new owner for € 515,700.
Piero Dorazio ’s splendid work Il bello blu (1961) leaves behind the low estimate of € 120,000 and after a brief contention changes hands for € 454,700, approaching the record achieved by the artist at Sotheby’s Milan in April 2018, where the work Un bel niente scored € 489,000. Also doing well were Carla Accardi. Turcheserosso (1963) and Segni (Grande Oro) (1967), are sold for € 161,900 and € 174,100 respectively.
Good results also for Enrico Castellani and Emilio Vedova, sold above the high estimate, but it is on Ellisse bracelet, MOD. LF4 (1967) by Lucio Fontana that a bidding battle ensues. What is special about this work is that it was originally intended to be part of a limited series designed for 150 pieces, but was later discontinued at only 11 pieces. The work shreds the low estimate of €15,000 to reach an impressive €204,600.
Record for the monumental work by Austrian Maria Lassnig. The artist, who received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 55th Venice Biennale, is featured in the auction with Wilde Tiere sind gefährdet (1980). The work immediately garnered the attention of collectors, becoming the subject of a telephone dispute that led to it finding a new owner for €1,367,800.
Excellent finish also for Georges Mathieu’s Le temps a laissé son manteau, around (1987), which changed hands for € 873,300, and for Andy Warhol ’s Portrait of a Lady (1983) adjudicated for € 450,213.
