Registration is now open for d:cult, the course for cultural heritage popularizers

The IANUA School of the University of Genoa launches the second edition of d:cult, the first advanced training course in Italy dedicated to the scientific popularization of cultural heritage. An opportunity for 30 young graduates under 35, with more than 250 hours of lectures and workshops. Enrollment open until March 31, 2025.

After the success of the first edition, enrollment is back for d:cult, the first advanced training course in Italy entirely dedicated to the scientific popularization of cultural heritage. Promoted by the IANUA Graduate School of theUniversity of Genoa, the training course is aimed at young graduates under 35 from all over Italy and aims to train professionals capable of translating academic research into a language accessible to a wide audience.

“Since its first edition, d:cult has proven to respond to a concrete need, training professionals capable of narrating and enhancing cultural heritage with innovative tools and a multidisciplinary approach,” says Giacomo Montanari, director of d:cult. “The results speak for themselves: 100 percent of the students completed the course; more than 30 high-profile professors made their skills available to the students; collaborations with partners, institutions and companies, which provided scholarships, mentoring and placement opportunities, proved to be strategic; and the enthusiasm of the public who participated in the events open to the city confirmed the value of our proposal. Today we look to the future with the goal of further enhancing our educational offerings, strengthening our network and developing new international connections to make cultural outreach increasingly accessible, inclusive and dynamic.”

The initiative aims to fill a gap in the Italian cultural education landscape, where mediation between research and the public is often inadequately structured. With more than 250 hours of intensive teaching spread between May and July, the course offers an interdisciplinary approach that integrates theoretical lectures, field trips and hands-on workshops. Prominent among the topics covered are cultural design, scientific communication and the use of new multimedia technologies in heritage enhancement.

A distinctive aspect of d:cult is its focus on different modes of dissemination: from in-person storytelling to cultural event design and engagement strategies for museums and institutions. In addition, the course provides methodological skills for teaching art history in schools, an area in which effective communication plays a key role in engaging new generations.

Through collaboration with high-profile faculty and professionals from academic, cultural and business backgrounds, the training course aims to offer concrete tools for the creation of innovative cultural products. The goal is to train experts capable of connecting scientific knowledge with the needs of the public, exploiting the technological resources available today and adapting the language of dissemination to different contexts.

The course has a maximum of 30 participants and applications are open until March 31, 2025. The call for applications is available on the official website of the IANUA School(https://ianua.unige.it/dcult-2025-2edizione).

An additional incentive for aspiring disseminators is the opportunity to access scholarships and funding that fully cover the participation fee, set at 3,000 euros. Ligurian students will be able to benefit from “Specialize to Compete” vouchers made available by the Region of Liguria through the European Social Fund, while scholarships provided by the project partners are provided for residents outside the region. To obtain reimbursement, it will be necessary to attend at least 80 percent of the class hours.

With this second edition, d:cult confirms itself as a relevant opportunity for those who want a future in the field of cultural dissemination, a constantly evolving field that requires transversal skills and the ability to adapt to new communication tools.
