Five scholarships on the baroque (digital) at 23,000 euros each. The 1563 Foundation is also awarding them for 2020.

The 1563 Foundation of Turin is announcing its usual annual scholarships: five scholarships, each of 23,000 euros.

The appointment with the scholarships for high studies on the age and culture of the Baroque of the 1563 Foundation in Turin is renewed: also for this year, the foundation is announcing the usual five scholarships named after Rosaria Cigliano, worth 23,000 euros each, for a total amount of 110,000 euros.

What is new is that this year it will be about... digital baroque (complete with hashtag #baroccodigital). For the 2020 edition, the focus will in fact be on research involving the use of digital tools: from the design to the presentation of the final results. In fact, the call aims to encourage the presentation of research that involves the use of digital tools both in the design and execution phase and in the return of the final results: therefore, the candidate will have to consider their experience and aptitude in the field of digital, with particular reference to the application of Human Language Technologies, Historical Content Analysis, Temporal and Spatial Content Tracking, Data Visualization, GIS and Linked Open Data.

Each of the five selected researchers will receive, in addition to the 23,000-euro grant, the support of an expert mentor and stays at foreign universities. The call for applications is aimed at researchers born after Jan. 1, 1982, who hold a doctorate, specialization or master’s degree of Level I and II (or equivalent foreign certificates) from Italian or foreign universities. The fellowships will be for one year, starting on January 1, 2021 and ending on December 31, 2021.

The candidate should present a research project that makes use of materials, including those already digitized, by working, in a new angle or approached in a new way, on funds of documents, sources, images and collections of different genres, themes and types, available on digital media or directly on the web, or alternatively, if already in possession of collected materials that can go to implement or complete funds already digitized, he/she should present a research project on these materials and plan to include them.

The dissemination component, i.e., the return, in a virtual environment and beyond, of the contents of the elaborated project will not be neglected in the evaluation. The outcomes of the research should be rendered through the presentation of a historical-critical essay and a restitution project in digital form. This digital product will not be suggested and provided in any way or form by the 1563 Foundation, which will, however, support the candidate in implementing digital skills. An illustration of the ways through which the research and presentation of the final outcomes will be approached will be an integral part of the application. For all relevant information you can visit the dedicated section on the 1563 Foundation website.

The 1563 Foundation’s call for scholarships on the Baroque, now in its eighth edition, has so far disbursed more than one million euros in total, supporting research projects on the Baroque by involving and supporting 37 young Italian and foreign scholars, 65 tutors and 120 teachers and researchers. The high scholarships are part of the articulated program of studies on the age and culture of the Baroque that is at the heart of the 1563 Foundation’s activities along with the management and enhancement of the Compagnia di San Paolo Historical Archives.
