MAXXI - National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome hosts, from November 10, 2018 to March 10, 2019, the first solo exhibition of the great cartoonist Zerocalcare (real name Michele Rech, Cortona, 1983), entitled Digging ditches, feeding crocodiles. Zerocalcare began by taking, in high school, his activity as a cartoonist, and from a very young age (at the age of 20) he began collaborating with prestigious magazines and newspapers such as Liberazione, Carta and La Repubblica XL. In 2015 he took second place at the Premio Strega Giovani with Dimentica il mio nome, and in 2017 one of his best-known comics, La profezia dell’armadillo, was made into a film released in 2018. The artist, the presentation reads, has “always been linked to the underground scene, spokesperson for the generation of the 1990s, who grew up between precariousness and the web, between the G8 in Genoa and TV series,” and is now one of Italy’s most appreciated comic strip artists.
The MAXXI project, organized around three thematic nuclei(Pop and Tribe, Resistance and Politics, Non-Reportage) traces all the years of Zerocalcare’s work among posters, a wide selection of illustrations, record covers, original plates of his nine books, T-shirts, logos and a site-specific work designed by the artist for the occasion.
