Zanbagh Lotfi returns to Rome's Richter Gallery with the exhibition I'm Just Killing Time

On view through March 23 at Richter Fine Art gallery in Rome is I’m just killing time, the new solo exhibition by Zanbagh Lotfi (Tehran, 1976) two years after his last solo show at the same venue. The paintings on display maintain the enveloping characteristic of the Iranian artist’s style, which glues the viewer to the canvas, but the almost total absence of figuration gives way to more blurred and abstract patches of color.

As Eva Comuzzi states in her critical text, “The human figure has almost disappeared and landscapes have become even more fragmented. Shapes of various kinds interpenetrate each other without leaving space. Each element seems to want to take hold, without succeeding, and everything remains suspended. Waiting for something new to arise from this deflagration. I immediately think of a period of transition in which, as never before, one awaits the arrival of a surprise. Of something that will surprise her. They are definitely, and in every sense, works in progress. Even outside, the street is a construction site and will remain so for a long time. An orange fence net appears in all the paintings. It is this element that will eventually expand and take hold. Sometimes it tries to contain, sometimes it imprisons, sometimes it lets the best light filter through. Often, however, it signals us to stop and wait.”
