The exhibition La Casa dell’Eremita sul Naviglio (from September 18 to October 31, 2019) by the young French artist Caroline Mesquita (Brest, 1989) opens the second round of the PROJECT ROOM 2019 exhibition cycle at the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan, an opportunity to convey the research and production of artists under 40 who investigate sculpture in innovative ways.
The Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation, in collaboration with the Fondazione del Giudice, has given the French artist the opportunity to produce an imposing new sculpture and to use materials previously unseen in his production such as stone. In fact, the installation consists of light-colored beola (an ancient stone of Lombard origin that covers the entire surface of the Pomodoro Foundation) and bronze and brass objects, carefully selected by the artist, some from the Fonderia Nolana del Giudice di Nola(Naples) where the work was produced.
The exhibition stages the fictional tale of a hermit who inhabited a stone hut that has survived through time and is now on display at the Foundation. The story goes that the city expanded around the hut, protecting this important refuge, a symbol of an alternative way of life based on retreat, isolation and rejection of social norms.
The Hermit’s House on the Naviglio thus becomes a metaphor for a model of life no longer accepted by society: an existence conducted outside the logic of the system according to autonomous rules.
