World premiere of codex 512 of the Divine Comedy on display at Monte Cassino

The Abbey Museum of Montecassino is exhibiting for the first time in the world codex 512 of the Divine Comedy, with notes in the margins by Dante's son.

For the first time as a world premiere, from Sept. 11 to Dec. 31, 2021, codex 512 of The Divine Comedy dating back to the 14th century, with notes by Pietro Alighieri, Dante’s son, in the margin, will be on display in the spaces of the Abbey Museum of Montecassino.

On the occasion of this event entitled Montecassino and Dante, the public will also be able to admire other ancient and valuable editions of the Supreme Poet’s works, including codex 257 containing The Vision of Alberico da Settefrati, a precious witness considered by many to be a source of inspiration for the Tuscan poet in the writing of his Comedy.

Organized on the occasion of the seventh centenary of Dante Alighieri’s death and curated by the Monastic Community of Montecassino, the exhibition presents the manuscript and printed works, preserved in the Archive and Library of Montecassino, which for more than three months will embellish the already rich showcases of the Abbey Museum to see unique masterpieces up close.

An important response has also come from the territory: many representatives of the business world have shown their willingness to provide their support and collaboration to make possible together this exhibition, which intends to be among the most significant on Dante in this 2021.
