Woman's Body. Letizia Battaglia's first Florentine exhibition.

In Florence, Crumb Gallery is hosting from March 7 to April 7, 2020 Letizia Battaglia's exhibition, Corpo di donna.

From March 7 to April 7, 2020 Crumb Gallery in Florence presents the exhibition Letizia Battaglia. Body of a Woman: this is the first exhibition of the famous photographer in the Tuscan capital, and on this occasion 23 shots in different formats, including many previously unseen, will be on public view. The photographs on display will address well-known but also more intimate themes of her artistic journey.

Letizia Battaglia (Palermo 1935) is recognized as one of the most important figures in contemporary photography, not only for her shots that are strongly present in the collective imagination, but also for the civil and ethical value she attributes to photography.

Her are the best-known shots that tell the story of the Mafia in Palermo with crude images; in addition to these reportages, she has always documented the lives of ordinary people in the streets, in homes, in workplaces, in markets, capturing above all the human movement, the expression of the eyes, the attitude of the mouth of women and girls.

The photographs on display at the Crumb Gallery tell precisely the story of women portrayed naked or lifting their veils.

In a recent interview, Letizia Battaglia had revealed, “In Florence I will exhibit photographs of nudes. I tell the grandeur, beauty and sweetness of the female body. Not sexy or in model poses. About 20 photos taken from the 1970s to 2019. There is the girl as well as the woman in her seventies, who as I shoot says I am beautiful as I am. I photographed them with solidarity and respect. A photographer should always be asked for respect, he should ennoble the truth. Photography is a wonderful act, like making love. But with rigor and without vanity.”

During the exhibition period, the documentary film Letizia Battaglia - Schooting the Mafia by Kim Longinotto will be shown from March 23 to 25 at Cinema Odeon Firenze and Cinema Stensen, which recounts, with an intimate and private slant, the life and career of the Palermo photographer.

Hours: Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m.; other days by appointment.
