Woman, painter and miniaturist in seventeenth-century Italy: Giovanna Garzoni to be featured in exhibition at Palazzo Pitti

From March 10 to May 24, 2020, Palazzo Pitti will host the exhibition The Greatness of the Universe, which will showcase the works of Giovanna Garzoni (Ascoli Piceno, 16000 - Rome, 1670) collected by the Medici and still owned by the Uffizi Galleries.

The exhibition, curated by Sheila Barker, is entirely dedicated to the artist of Marche origin, who was a recognized protagonist in the evolution of scientific illustration, yet is less well known as an illustrator of the geographical imagery of the Baroque era. Indeed, in harmonious and often small-scale compositions, Giovanna Garzoni combined exotic objects of diverse origins, such as Chinese porcelain, Pacific nautiluses, Mexican gourds and flowers, South American plants or English drawing room dogs, with the ultimate goal of astonishment and amusement.

Deviating from the female lifestyle model of her time, Garzoni traveled to Italy, perhaps France, and had access to the most important collections of curiosities. The exhibition will feature her works collected by the Medici and still held by the Galleries, as well as targeted loans that illustrate the artist’s range of work and her skill as a portraitist. Based on an unpublished inventory, one section reconstructs Vittoria della Rovere ’s Wunderkammer housed in the Sala dell’Aurora at the Poggio Imperiale, thus indirectly shedding light on a prominent figure of the Grand Ducal family.
