TheOther Size Gallery by Workness in Milan presents from April 17 to May 31, 2019 the exhibition Ousmane Ndiaye Dago. Woman Earth. The public will have the opportunity to admire the most representative cycle of Senegalese photographer Ousmane Ndiaye Dago, among the leading exponents of thecontemporary African avant-garde. Fifteen medium- and large-format photographs from Giampaolo Prearo’s collection will be on display, in which the artist has reinterpreted the female body, disguising it with plaster, mud, clay and brushstrokes of color.

In the Femme Terre cycle, made from the second half of the 1990s, the body is hidden and revealed by various materials and fabrics. The skin of African models becomes a surface on which to create: they become geological and almost marble-like simulacra, made of earth and immortalized in two-dimensional images. The result is photographs with vivid, glazed, translucent color.

Between the 1990s and the 2000s, the body is an instrument of political, social and aesthetic claim . Femme Terre is a project that, inspired by ritual and magical practices of African culture, stems from the idea of identifying women with Mother Earth; the models’ bodies, through clay, are reshaped and ascribed to a kind of original time in the world. The models never show their faces to represent powerful and erotic forms, but with undefined identity.
The scene is set in an almost theatrical way: among the shadows and suggestions of the forest; the action is circumscribed within the limits of the framing of the photographic gesture as a still image.
