wo-MAN RAY. The seductions of photography: from October at CAMERA in Turin.

CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin presents from October 17, 2019 to January 19, 2020 the exhibition wo-MAN RAY. The Seductions of Photography, curated by Walter Guadagnini and Giangavino Pazzola.

About two hundred photographs taken from the 1920s until the master’s death in 1976 will be on display here, all depicting a specific subject, namely women, a source of inspiration throughout the photographer’s career.

Some of the shots on display made the history of twentieth-century photography: the female body was a favorite subject of Man Ray, who represented it through his rayographs, solarizations, and double exposures.

Among the women featured in his shots were Lee Miller, Berenice Abbott, Dora Maar, and of course his lifelong companion, Juliet, to whom the portfolio The Fifty Faces of Juliet (1943-1944) is dedicated.
These female figures were themselves artists, and this aspect will also be presented to the public. Representing the work of Berenice Abbott will be on view portraits taken between 1926 and 1938 in Paris and New York; Dora Maar will be present with works traceable to a language of street photography and landscape, as in Gamin aux Chaussures Dépareillés (1933). The investigation of the female body will be the focus of Lee Miller’s work, with numerous self-portraits and nudes of models who worked with her in both research and fashion photography.

The exhibition is made possible through the collaboration of numerous national and international institutions and galleries, including CSAC in Parma, ASAC in Venice, the Lee Miller Archive in Sussex, Mast in Bologna, and Fondazione Marconi in Milan.
