From January 17 to 25, 2020, Senza Poesia, an exhibition by artists Nicola Golea and Serena Nono dedicated to migration, arrives at Casa Emergency in Milan.
The exhibition is a visual journey on migration in which Golea and Nono’s paintings and drawings restore a face to those nameless bodies whose lives are lost in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, there will be a 45-minute documentary screening with talks by: Andrea Segre, Michele Cinque, Massimo Cacciari, Ottavia Piccolo, Giancarlo Gaeta, Massimo Donà, David Riondino, Rossella Miccio, Gino Strada and Giorgia Novello.
“The figures and bodies painted by Serena Nono,” comments art critic Agnes Kohlmeyer, “present features that are as sure as they are sensitive and delicate, often in rather muted colors, very light browns or grays, sometimes the white of a white shirt. Gazes often half-closed, dreamy or downcast, bodies and backs bent and characteristically treated with the dripping of much liquid, almost as if from brush strokes. [...]. Nicola Golea has added to her typical galleries of portraits of characters, known or unknown, and rather mysterious, also the galleries of refugees, some of them beautiful characters-otherwise I could not describe the girl in her lovely white dress nor some of the young men or children, though with eyes wide with terror or downcast and infinitely sad.”
“The issue of migrants, on which the exhibition reflects,” added artists Nono and Golea, “is a reality that is part of our lives every day: one cannot not think about it, not see it, not mourn it, not feel concern and sorrow for what happens to many, too many people. Emergency teaches and guides us in the feeling and will of solidarity and commitment.”
