It arrived in Milan on Oct. 6, and will remain there until Dec. 10, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, the world’s most prestigious exhibition of wildlife photography, which also renews its appointment for 2017 (this is the fifty-second edition): under the patronage of the City of Milan, the exhibition will be held in the premises of the Luciana Matalon Foundation (Foro Buonaparte 67). The exhibition this year makes use of 100 images, chosen from 50,000 shots taken in the 2016 edition of the event by professional and amateur photographers from all over the world, which were screened by a jury of experts and divided into sixteen categories.
The first prize, theWildlife Photographer of the Year award, in 2016 had gone to Tim Laman of the United States, author of the shot Intertwined Lives (category The Wildlife Photojournalist Award: Story) set in the rainforest of Indonesia: the protagonist is an orangutan from Borneo, an endangered species due to the progressive reduction of its habitat and the illegal pet trade. The prize in the youth section(Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year), on the other hand, went to Gideon Knight (UK), 16, for his photograph The Moon and the Crow, set in London near his home. Italy had three winners: Marco Colombo from Lombardy won the “Amphibian Reptiles and Fish” category with Piccolo Tesoro, Valter Binotto from the Veneto region won the “Plants and Mushrooms” category with The Composition of the Wind, and Stefano Unterthiner from the Aosta Valley triumphed in the “On the Territory” category with his Spirit of the Mountains. The exhibition is divided into sections, each dedicated to different categories. Diversity on Earth includes the categories “Mammals,” “Birds,” “Reptiles, Amphibians and Fish,” “Invertebrates,” and “Plants and Fungi”; in Design of the Earth, nature will be seen from an artistic perspective in the categories “Details,” “Impressions,” and “Black and White.” Terrestrial Environments will celebrate the diversity of habitats with the categories “Underwater,” “Urban Environment” and “Land”; finally, the Documentary section investigates the relationship between humans and nature with the sections “The Wildlife Photojournalist Award: Single Image” and “The Wildlife Photojournalist Award: Story.” Finally, do not miss the photographs in the First Shots section, reserved for children and young people (categories: up to 10 years old, 11 to 14 years old and 15 to 17 years old).
