Why does representing the ordinary in painting fascinate us? An exhibition in Bologna investigates it

From January 21 to February 23, 2020, at Palazzo de' Toschi in Bologna, an exhibition investigates the representation of ordinary realities in painting.

Opening on January 21, 2020, on the occasion of Arte Fiera, in Bologna, the exhibition The Ordinary Realities, which can be visited at Palazzo de’ Toschi until February 23, 2020.

Curated by Davide Ferri, the exhibition will display paintings made by twelve artists: Helene Appel (1976), Riccardo Baruzzi (1976), Luca Bertolo (1968), Andrew Grassie (1966), Clive Hodgson (1953), Maria Morganti (1965), Carol Rhodes (1959 - 2018), Salvo (1947 - 2015), Michele Tocca (1983), Patricia Treib (1979), Phoebe Unwin (1979), and Rezi van Lankveld (1973).

The aim of the exhibition is to investigate certain aspects of figuration in the present, starting with an idea of the representation of the ordinary in painting and a series of questions about the existence of a drive toward classical genres, the way in which artists can indulge or counteract it, and the emergence of an attraction to ordinary subjects such as still lifes, flowerpots, landscapes, and domestic interiors.

Therefore, the exhibition aims to trace the contours of a very broad field that includes genre paintings as well as more hybrid or abstract paintings that spring from the observation of minimal, everyday phenomena.

Ordinary Realities is one of the Main Projects of the 2020 edition of ART CITY Bologna and is presented by Banca Bologna.
