More than 100 shots by Robert Doisneau (Gentilly, 1912 - Paris, 1994) will be hosted at the Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona from November 15, 2023 to February 14, 2024. The exhibition, curated by Gabriel Bauret and promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo and produced by Silvana Editoriale, under the patronage of the City of Verona, traces the great French artist’s creative journey through 135 black-and-white images, all from the collection of the Atelier Robert Doisneau in Montrouge, in the immediate southern suburbs of Paris.
In Montrouge, Doisneau developed and archived his images for over fifty years, and it was there that he passed away, leaving a legacy of nearly 450,000 negatives. From the same atelier, today his two daughters contribute to the dissemination and popularization of his work, accepting constant requests from museums, festivals and publishing houses.
Among the works in the exhibition could not miss Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville, Paris, 1950, a famous and iconic image, believed to be among the most reproduced in the world, in which a young couple kisses in front of Paris City Hall. The famous shot was not the result of chance: Doisneau was doing a shoot for the American Life magazine and therefore asked the two young people to pose for him. “What I was trying to show was,” says Doisneau, “a world where I would feel good, where people would be kind, where I would find the tenderness I hoped to receive. My photos were like a proof that this world can exist.”
The exhibition is enhanced by the screening of excerpts from Clémentine Deroudille’s film Robert Doisneau. Le Révolté du merveilleux and an interview with curator Gabriel Bauret.
The exhibition is accompanied by the catalog “Robert Doisneau,” published by Silvana Editoriale.
